A 'Stringy' Treat on Monday Morning

This morning our Year Ones were introduced to the string instruments they will play in Year Two in 2019. 

Our current Year Two friends Edan, Felix and Harrison showed us the violin, viola and cello and we met our Strings teacher, Toby. We learned that the cello makes the lowest sounds and the violin makes the highest sounds. After learning a little bit about each of the instruments, the boys treated us to an exclusive performance of Jingle Bells.

Students will be fitted and allocated an instrument at the beginning of 2019. They will bring their instruments home to practise each week, engage in small group tutorial sessions once a week as well as a group Ensemble time. 

Last chance to order Scholastic books and last chance to borrow from the Learning Hub in 2018

Last chance to order books through Scholastic is Monday 26 November and last chance to borrow before the end of term is week 7. 
Library books will need to be returned the following week, at the latest by Thursday 6 December 2018.

Mathematics Comes to Life

Students are especially motivated by Mathematics that connects with the world around them. This term, Year 3 and 4 have been exploring the skills involved in running a lemonade stand. This has been a fun way to explore a range of ideas related to measurement, number sense and money. To make their learning even more exciting, they will be running their own drink stall next Monday, 26 November at recess. Students will be able to purchase lemonade, raspberry fizz or banana smoothie, made by the students, for $1.50. We hope many of our students will support this authentic learning project by purchasing a cup from one of the stalls.

Multiplication and Division

Over the past few weeks have been busy looking closely at multiplication and division strategies, using concrete materials. For multiplication the students have been making equal groups and calculating what the total would be. For division they have been sharing objects equally into groups and finding out how many in each group. 
They have discovered that multiplication is the same as repeated addition, and division is the same as repeated subtraction. These are extremely important steps towards developing a complete understanding of multiplication and division prior to the introduction of the x sign, or 'times tables'.

Making Bee Hotels

Last Wednesday was a great day for making bee hotels! Abbie, the presenter, came in and gave an explanation of the different kinds of bees that live in our Sydney region, what they need to survive and the types of places we might find each of these bees.

With the help of a few of our friends, she demonstrated how bees pollinate flowers before we launched into an action packed morning of nailing and hammering. We displayed great perseverance, absorption and collaboration (with only a few banged fingers)!
