The Premiers Reading Challenge closes by the end of day on Friday! 

Students need to complete entry of books on their Student Reading Record (SRR) by the end of August to be eligible for the award of a certification of their efforts.

Year 1 Excursion - Ryde Schoolhouse Museum

1SB had a very interesting and enjoyable day on Monday on our excursion to the NSW Schoolhouse Museum at Ryde, where we were able to see and experience what it was like for students in the past. 

We started our experience doing some physical exercise and learned how to dance the Maypole. We also played some ‘old fashioned games’, which included ‘Fly’, skipping, quoits and rolling hoops.

We visited a school room from the 1880’s, where we learned about the style of instruction students received at this time – more than one grade per room, rows of desks with bench seating, no talking allowed, learning by rote, only learning “the three R’s” and  . . . . the possibility of being caned! The students were very excited to be have the opportunity to write on a slate using a slate pencil and to also use a nib pen and ink to write in an exercise book using cursive writing.

In the 1930’s classroom we saw some of the toys and games children used in the past – some of which we still play today. They sang “God Save the King” and went on a treasure hunt, searching for artefacts in the display cases around the room. Students also cooked a piece of toast over the open fire, with the assistance of our lovely parent helpers.

We had a fabulous day and learnt much about schooling in the past. It was a wonderful opportunity, especially considering our upcoming interviews with an older relative or friend about aspects of their childhoods in the past.

Join in the fun 'me hearties' and come and listen to a book taster reading at lunch time in the Hub, Flexi Room or Stretch Zone.

Term 3 Science Update!

We've been having lots of fun in Year 1 Science so far this term investigating the effect of push and pull forces.

  

One of our challenges has been to design our own boat, that could float, using a selection of materials.

 

Could we make our boats move on the water without touching them? How could we make them sail faster or slow down quickly?

 

We also performed an investigation where we had to predict whether a ball of blue tac or a strip of blue tac would float...what do you think happened?

The results lead Lincoln to wondering what would happen if we changed the shape of the blue tac. Would the push from the water be able to hold up a boat-like shape?

Therefore, the following week, we set up a station so we could spend some time experimenting moulding modelling clay into different shapes and testing them on the water - with some success!

  

Different strengths of pushes or pulls also affect the way an object moves through the air. Using our scientific eye, we threw paper aeroplanes, screwed up pieces of paper and folded paper to try to see where the pushes or pulls were happening, which type of paper was more efficient through the air and why.

    

After watching a quick video on how to make a rocket balloon, we created our own and again used our scientific eyes to observe how pushes or pulls were moving the balloon along. We noticed that if we pointed the opening of the balloon in a direction other than backwards, it would slow the balloon down significantly. Oliver added that the friction of the rope would also slow down the progress of the balloon. The more air the balloon had, the further and faster it would travel (if the opening was positioned correctly for the air to push it along the rope).

   


That's it so far. We're looking forward to investigating more about pushes and pulls and will keep you updated with how clever we are and the discoveries we are making!

Science Week activities - encourage your children to join in!

Parents are invited to bring their children to the Scholastic Book Fair in the Hall on Wednesday, 22 August or Thursday 23 August. At the same time, take the opportunity to view student Book Week artworks in the Hall or the Art Room.

Log in to the Premiers Reading Challenge web site to record all the books you have read before 31 August. 

There is still time to join in the challenge of reading different quality literature as recommended by the NSW Premier! 

You only need to read 30 books on your own, or read them with someone or someone can read them to you.

There is helpful section to search for book choices on the Premiers Reading Challenge web site. 
Log onto Premiers Reading Challenge search and then explore the available categories.
