Term 3 Science Update!


We've been having lots of fun in Year 1 Science so far this term investigating the effect of push and pull forces.

  

One of our challenges has been to design our own boat, that could float, using a selection of materials.

 

Could we make our boats move on the water without touching them? How could we make them sail faster or slow down quickly?

 

We also performed an investigation where we had to predict whether a ball of blue tac or a strip of blue tac would float...what do you think happened?

The results lead Lincoln to wondering what would happen if we changed the shape of the blue tac. Would the push from the water be able to hold up a boat-like shape?

Therefore, the following week, we set up a station so we could spend some time experimenting moulding modelling clay into different shapes and testing them on the water - with some success!

  

Different strengths of pushes or pulls also affect the way an object moves through the air. Using our scientific eye, we threw paper aeroplanes, screwed up pieces of paper and folded paper to try to see where the pushes or pulls were happening, which type of paper was more efficient through the air and why.

    

After watching a quick video on how to make a rocket balloon, we created our own and again used our scientific eyes to observe how pushes or pulls were moving the balloon along. We noticed that if we pointed the opening of the balloon in a direction other than backwards, it would slow the balloon down significantly. Oliver added that the friction of the rope would also slow down the progress of the balloon. The more air the balloon had, the further and faster it would travel (if the opening was positioned correctly for the air to push it along the rope).

   


That's it so far. We're looking forward to investigating more about pushes and pulls and will keep you updated with how clever we are and the discoveries we are making!
